How is "don't answer the door" the advice here? Do you think the cops are just going to go away if he doesn't answer? Is there anything else you could recommend, or is "pray they don't kill you" really it?

That's the default position for a suspicious knock, but not a universal answer. For example, like you said, if it's police with a warrant you'll have to open the door. The Mas Ayoob video has specifics about how to do this, but generally you should (a) verify that they are indeed real police (in some circumstances, you may be able to call 911 and ask the dispatcher to verify that police have been sent to your door), and (b) open the door unarmed.
