The word "compromise" is used far too often in this context when a more accurate word would be "capitulate".
The only gun law I can think of that had a true compromise was FOPA: We got back some rights and lost some, Hughes being intended as a poison pill to derail the whole thing notwithstanding. Everything else has simply been a capitulation under duress, more like a lawsuit settlement than an actual compromise.
Actually, this is the best column on this topic that I have seen in a long time. Personally, I don't want to see compromise on any of our 2nd Amendment principles, but at least your column discusses the politics of the approach of these old geezer politicians in realistic terms. Like I wrote, I don't want to see any compromise from our side. We've been compromised too much already. I'm old enough to remember when we could purchase a firearm from the Sears, Roebuck catalog, and I thoroughly hate what has happened to our rights.
Let’s hope this non-compromise fails. And if it doesn’t, let’s make sure these old-school politicians pay a price for being so out-of-touch with their constituents.
Texas Sen. John Cornyn is reported to be expecting this deal to cement his campaign to succeed Mitch McConnell as Senate Republican Leader. South Dakota Sen. John Thune, Cornyn’s chief competitor in the leadership race, has already signaled his opposition to this deal.

The choice is clear.
